What Are the Different Types of Hair Transplant?
Innovations in hair transplant surgery such as follicular unit transplantation (FUT) and follicular unit extraction (FUE) produce excellent results when performed by a plastic surgeon with exceptional credentials and experience. Those are only two of the options available to our patients; however, Dr. Quatela and Dr. Lee recommend the best approach for your situation based on his or her experience and your cosmetic goals. For example, not everyone is a good candidate for hair transplant surgery, which is why we also offer nonsurgical approaches to hair restoration.

Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE)
This hair transplant technique involves harvesting individual follicular units, which contain from 1 to 4 hairs, and then transplanting them one by one in thinning areas. FUE patients typically experience only minor discomfort and require minimal downtime. Because the donor sites are inconspicuous, this is a good option for patients who want to wear their hair very short.
Follicular Unit Transplantation (FUT)
This hair transplant technique is sometimes called the “strip method” because it involves the removal of a small strip of the hair-bearing scalp from the back of the head. The strip is then separated into microfollicular unit grafts which are carefully transplanted into thinning areas of the scalp. This technique is typically less expensive and quicker to perform than FUE. A well-known drawback of FUT is that it leaves a linear scar in the donor area; however, Dr. Quatela and Dr. Lee use their facial plastic surgery expertise to close the incision so it is concealed by the surrounding hair.
Non-Surgical Options
We offer several medications and topical products that may be used instead of, or in addition to, hair transplant surgery. Options include platelet-rich plasma (PRP) treatments and Rogaine®.
Hair Plug Repair
We can correct unattractive or unnatural-looking hair transplant results using modern hair transplant techniques. Previous hair transplants that involved large, noticeable “hair plugs” may be partially or completely removed, and replaced with microfollicular unit grafts. In some cases, microfollicular units are precisely placed around hair plugs to improve the overall appearance of the hair restoration.
Scalp Reduction
Patients who are bothered by balding in the crown area may benefit from scalp reduction surgery. Depending on the size of the balding area, part or all of it is excised, and the scalp is pulled together to close the defect. This results in a lower hairline and smaller forehead area. For some patients, a dramatic improvement can be achieved. The best candidates for scalp reduction surgery generally have good donor hair density and a highly elastic scalp.
Eyebrow Transplants
Eyebrow thinning or loss can have a significant impact on an individual’s total appearance, since eyebrows are a key landmark on the face. Eyebrow loss can also have a damaging effect on one’s self-esteem and personal confidence. Any individual who has partial or complete loss of one or both eyebrows is a possible candidate for an eyebrow transplant using their own natural hair from another area, such as the back of the head.
