FUT Before & After Photos
Keep in mind that each patient is unique and your results may vary.
Thinning hair is a common cosmetic concern among both men and women. Choosing the correct hair restoration option based on your goals and your surgeon’s physical examination of your scalp is the first step to achieving the desired results. Dr. Quatela, Dr. Lee, or Dr. Montague creates a treatment plan based on the reason for your hair loss and your consultation. For many patients, follicular unit transplantation (FUT) is the best approach. Another option is follicular unit extraction (FUE) performed by Dr. Quatela, Dr. Lee, or Dr. Montague, and the hair restoration team. You may also consider non-surgical options, such as topical or oral medications. In some cases, your surgeon may advise using topical or oral products and medications after hair transplant surgery to help promote hair growth.
How Is a Hair Transplant Done?
There are areas of the scalp that are genetically programmed to be immune to the hormones that cause baldness. With the exception of certain medical conditions, the back and sides of the scalp continue to grow hair, even for people with male pattern baldness. Hair harvested from these areas and grafted to balding portions will continue to grow because it retains its genetic code. The personalized patient care you receive at the Quatela Center begins with providing all the information you need to understand hair transplant surgery and why it’s so effective.

The FUT hair transplant technique is sometimes called the “strip method” because it involves the removal of a strip of hair-bearing skin from the back of the scalp that is then separated into microfollicular unit grafts to be transplanted. At the beginning of the procedure, a density count is taken to determine the size of the strip to be harvested. The area is then shaved and numbed with a local anesthetic to ensure your comfort during the hair transplant procedure. Once the grafts have been harvested, the recipient site is then numbed with a local anesthetic and follicular units are placed in the direction of your natural hair growth.
The goal of hair transplant surgery is to restore a thicker head of healthy hair in a way that appears natural. The skillful placement of follicular units in balding areas accounts for density, size, and texture of the hair, in addition to the angle that your hair naturally grows.
Hair naturally grows in follicular units containing between 1 and 4 hairs. After removing the small strip from the scalp in the donor area, units are harvested using a microscope and delicately handled to prevent damage. Creating these micrografts enables us to transplant more follicular units and place them closer together than what was possible with outdated techniques. This technique requires precision and the skill of an experienced surgeon such as Dr. Quatela, Dr. Lee, or Dr. Montague, and their dedicated hair restoration team. Surgery times vary depending on the size of the recipient area, the number of follicular units needed, and the patient’s individual needs. You should plan on spending the entire day at the Quatela Center, where we will keep you very comfortable.

How Long Does It Take to Recover From FUT Hair Transplant?
The recovery following FUT hair transplant surgery is minimal and includes the healing of the incision at the back of the scalp. Dr. Quatela, Dr. Lee, and Dr. Montague use their skills as facial plastic surgeons to close the incision using a technique that allows hair to grow over the incision, disguising the donor site even for patients who want to wear their hair short. It’s important to follow the instructions provided regarding shampooing and grooming during the first few weeks after hair transplant surgery.
How Long After Hair Transplant Do You See Results?
Results typically emerge gradually as the healing process occurs. As the grafts become established, new hair begins growing from the transplanted follicles and you will usually start to see a difference 3 to 4 months after the procedure. It generally takes up to a year before you’ll see the full results.
Dr. Alex Montague, M.D.
Board-Certified Otolaryngologist—Head And Neck Surgeon
Known for his exemplary skills in both technique and patient care, Dr. Montague is a highly-trained facial plastic surgeon and board-certified otolaryngologist-head and neck surgeon. He specializes in cosmetic and functional facial surgery and injectable treatments.
The two primary hair restoration procedures each have advantages, so the right choice largely depends on your preference. These are the advantages of the strip method (FUT):
It’s typically less time-consuming than FUE.
It’s generally less expensive.
You can get a large number of grafts from a smaller donor site.
How much does FUT cost?
The cost of the FUT procedure varies based on a number of factors, including the size of the area where your hair is thinning and the number of grafts needed. We will quote a specific estimated price at your consultation.
Are there side effects from FUT?
Hair transplant surgery is quite safe, and complications are rare. As with any surgical procedure, some minor side effects may occur. The most common include swelling, discomfort, itching, and numbness. These typically resolve on their own, but feel free to contact the Quatela Center with any questions or concerns if you do experience any of them following your hair transplant procedure.
