Follicular Unit Excision (FUE)

Follicular unit excision (FUE) is an advanced hair transplant technique offered at the Quatela Center for Hair Restoration in Rochester NY. FUE doesn’t require an incision and is often preferred by hair transplant patients who wear their hair short. This is why FUE is known as the “scarless” technique.

Because Dr. Vito Quatela, Dr. Heather Lee, and Dr. Alex Montague are very experienced FUE hair transplant surgeons, people travel not only from Buffalo and Syracuse, NY, but also internationally to the Quatela Center for Hair Restoration. Request a consultation using the online form, or call our office at (585) 244-0323 to schedule an appointment.

How Does FUE Hair Restoration Work?

The FUE hair restoration procedure begins with a density count to determine the area of the scalp from which we will harvest hair follicles (donor site). The hair in the donor site is shaved extremely close to the scalp and a local anesthetic is used to numb the donor site prior to harvesting the grafts. Using the Dutch method, or WAW foot pedal system, which has been adapted by the Quatela Center for FUE cases, the physicians use a handheld, motorized system that employs the use of a trumpet-shaped punch. This allows for more precise harvesting of quality grafts in a shorter period of time without the use of suction.

During the procedure, you may be seated, or lying face down or on your side. Once the desired number of grafts has been harvested, the recipient site is numbed with a local anesthetic and each graft is transplanted with attention to the angle of the natural hair growth to produce results that look natural. These subtle factors are critically important for Dr. Quatela, Dr. Lee, and Dr. Montague.

How Painful Is a Hair Transplant?

Your scalp is numb during the FUE procedure, so there is minimal discomfort. In addition to allowing for greater control over the grafts harvested, patients have reported that the gentler method of acquiring grafts with the Dutch method has made it more comfortable than other methods they have undergone. Our providers and staff have noticed patients have less complaints of pain with this method of FUE.

How Many Days Rest Are Needed After a Hair Transplant?

Because the FUE technique is minimally invasive, recovery is fairly quick with few restrictions on your activities. The Dutch method has decreased the donor site healing times by several days in many patients. Hold off on aerobic activity, heavy lifting, and any bending or straining for the first week. Please review the pre- and postoperative instructions to help you determine the length of time you will require before returning to work based on the activities you perform.

How Long After Hair Transplant Do You See Results?

The transplanted hair follicles usually require about 3 months before new growth can be appreciated. They will experience a process of shedding and regrowth during that period, with good results at 6 months and full results after 1 year.
